What is Sedation Dentistry?
At Optima Dental it’s our goal to provide a calm and inviting environment for our Lawrenceville patients. Whether you need to complete extensive dental work or just need help relaxing, Dr. Houenou recommends sedation dentistry to make your visit easy and stress-free.
We may offer oral medication or IV sedation to ensure your entire visit goes smoothly with little to no discomfort or anxiety. In preparation for your appointment, you will need to have someone drive you for your visit. Once you arrive, we’ll let you relax in a warm, quiet room under a cozy blanket and turn on a peaceful movie for you to feel comfortable and ready for your procedure.
Common Reasons Patients Need Sedation
There are many different reasons patients ask about sedation dentistry. Typically, Dr. Houenou offers sedatives to patients who:
- Have dental anxiety or phobia
- Had a previous bad dental experience
- Have a bad gag reflex
- Get anxiety when waiting for their appointment
- Are undergoing complex procedures
- Have sensitive oral nerves
- Feel uneasy when seeing dental tools
Types of Sedation We Offer
During your dental procedure, our dental team will closely monitor you to ensure you’re safe and your sedation levels are controlled. Dr. Houenou will carefully administer one of two types of sedation we offer at Optima Dental. Here’s what you can expect from our two options– IV sedation and oral conscious sedation.
Intravenous (IV) sedation is the safest, most effective way to deliver sedation dentistry and allows us to complete complex dental work in as little as one appointment. The process is simple and convenient. About an hour before your appointment you’ll take an oral medication that’ll help put you in a tranquil state right in time for your procedure.
Once you arrive we’ll take you to a quiet room where an IV is administered. This will help you enter a deeper state of relaxation and Dr. Houenou can control the level of sedation through the IV. When you wake up, you’ll have little to no memory of the entire procedure.
Oral Conscious Sedation:
We also use oral conscious sedation to help calm patients’ nerves before undergoing a procedure. Upon arriving at the office you are given a pill, and our staff will help you get comfortable while it takes effect. Many patients may lightly fall asleep and don’t always remember the procedure after taking an oral sedative.
Benefits Of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is a completely safe way to relieve any symptoms of stress or anxiety. Depending on the type of sedation, the effects can range from just helping you relax to allowing you to go through a procedure with little to no memory of the treatment. Some of the other benefits of sedation dentistry include:
- Allowing the completion of complex procedures in a single appointment
- Reducing stress and discomfort
- Reducing pain and memory of procedures
- Helps patients feel comfortable and confident
