Dr. Houneou Can Prepare You for Implants
When you visit Optima Dental for a dental implant procedure, we will first examine your mouth and take x-rays to see if there are any complications that may prevent the success of your implants. For patients who have advanced periodontal disease, tooth decay or a weak jawbone can lower your chances of receiving implant treatment.
Dr. Houenou offers various preliminary surgeries to better prepare for dental implants. This provides you with the opportunity to restore your oral health so you can receive our durable, natural-looking tooth restorations. If you’re feeling anxious about undergoing multiple surgeries, Dr. Houenou offers sedation dentistry to help ease your nerves. Learn about the different procedures we offer for each condition.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is a very common procedure we use to restore the structural integrity of your jaw. When patients have missing teeth, their jawbone isn’t receiving proper stimulation to stay strong and maintain its integrity. The empty area will deteriorate over time which causes your jaw to weaken and lose its bone density.
Fortunately, bone loss can be treated easily by Dr. Houenou with bone grafts. During this procedure, we will take a portion of healthy bone from your body and place it in your weakened jawbone. The bone graft will help your jawbone grow back so it can provide structural stability for your new implant.
Some cases may vary, but generally, this procedure takes about an hour and most patients feel little to no pain during or after the surgery.
Single or Multiple Tooth Extractions
When a tooth is far too damaged from tooth decay, gum disease, or extremely bad trauma, Dr. Houenou will have to extract it. In order for a dental implant to last long and be successfully stabilized to your jawbone, any harmful teeth must be removed. If they aren’t taken out, it can cause major issues down the road and affect your health.
The extraction procedure is very simple and you won’t feel much pain or discomfort. Dr. Houenou will numb the area, and work carefully to remove the tooth or teeth entirely. Then he will apply gauze to the site which will help stop any bleeding. After your appointment, we will give you some time for the extracted area to heal before you return for implants.
Sinus Augmentation
Sinus augmentation may be offered for a variety of reasons to prepare you for dental implants. For example, if bone height in your upper jaw is lacking, you’ll need a sinus lift. Or, if your maxillary sinus is too close to your jaw, we can correct it with this preparatory procedure.
For this surgery, we need to add bone to your upper jaw in the area of your molars and premolars. To open up room for this bone, your sinus membrane must be “lifted” so it can push away from your jaw and create sufficient space. Once the bone is in its set place and completely healed, Dr. Houenou can place your implants within 4-9 months.
